With their lively composition and scintillating, pure colours, Renée duRocher’s recent works are an invitation to an eminently urban world of underground spaces peopled by agile, bustling crowds. The historical attributes that are the artist’s usual hallmark have undergone a transformation, yielding a series that draws its inspiration from the crucible of 1930s Muscovite architectural utopia, synthesis of Russia’s avant-garde arts: the Moscow Metro. The underground corridors, populated with remarkable works of art, were an inspiration for the artist when she visited in 2007.
